Summer terrestrials are in the film or just under — terrestrial opportunism is the best read. Fish are being selective — feeding opportunistically, so presentation will count. The breeze will carry terrestrials onto the water. A small beetle or ant pattern fished tight to the bank on the downwind side is worth a try if hatches are sparse.

The historic literary chalk-stream layer — Halford leased Kennet water here in the late 1800s and Frank Sawyer ran his summer school from Marlborough College grounds. Home of the native Kennet 'greenback' trout. This is mostly private estate and syndicate water with river keepers; presented as heritage context rather than promised day-rod access.

Upper Kennet — Marlborough & Ramsbury

The most upstream beat of the Main Fishery, with several cleared pools kept fishable; part of the bank here is shared with the Chilton Estate on the far side.

Beat 1 — Undy's Meadow

A winding stretch above Rootes Hut with heavy weed growth; wild fish rise freely here through a good olive hatch.

Beat 2 — The Draughts

Fast water on a clean gravel bed running from Eddington Mill up to the fishery's century-old thatched fishing hut, with a strong pool where currents meet behind the island.

Beat 3 — Rootes Beat

From Eddington Bridge upstream to Eddington Mill. The stretch runs between The Island on the far bank and Charnham Street meadow.

Beat 4 — Upstream of Eddington Bridge

One of the most reliably rising stretches on the fishery, ending at the Wine Cellar Pool — a deep, wooded pool referenced in Kennet fishing lore since the mid-1800s.

Beat 5 — Eddington Bridge to Wine Cellar

The longest and most popular beat on the fishery — deeper and tree-shaded, holding fish well through summer, with strong blue-winged olive evenings late in the beat near the weed rack. The Jubilee Hut sits at the top end.

Beat 6 — Wine Cellar Bridge to Bracket Hatch

Two linked stretches — the main channel and the Back Stream — shaded enough to fish well on bright days, with sedges taking over once the mayfly finish. Only Commoners may fish on down to Denford Bridge.

Beat 7 — Bracket Hatch to Dun Mill Bridge

The first beat below the Kennet/Dun confluence — shallow, fast and thick with ranunculus, with strong mayfly, olive and sedge sport and a healthy stock of free-rising wild trout.

Beat 8 — Lower Meadow

A gravel-bedded stretch of the River Dun, 3–4 feet deep, running parallel to the Kennet below Hungerford. Fishes left-handed and best in low light; late-growing star wort keeps the water clear right through the season.

Beat 9 — Lower Dun

A developing side channel below Eddington Pool, winding past Eddington Lake to a new bridge on Beat 2. Largely too overgrown to fish directly, but valuable shelter and spawning habitat for the wider fishery.

Beat 10 — Historic Channel

Roughly a kilometre of the River Dun within an SSSI, one of two Town & Manor Dun beats, with its own fishing hut. Shallow and fast at the top, deepening into darker corners downstream that hold surprisingly large fish. Catch-and-release only.

Beat 11 — Hungerford Marsh (River Dun)

About a kilometre of shallower, more physically challenging River Dun water upstream of Hungerford Marsh, entirely within Freeman's Marsh SSSI. A classic small chalk stream — shrimp and sedge by day, blue-winged olives at dusk — with a healthy wild-trout population and shoals of grayling for the autumn angler.

Beat 12 — Freeman's Marsh (River Dun)

Main River Kennet plus smaller carriers holding stocked and wild trout, with two-rod casual days and reported six-rod Monday group days. No wading; a pavilion with toilet and hot-drink facilities. Trout season 1 May–15 October; nearest stations Hungerford and Newbury.

Avington Estate

About two miles of narrow, challenging Kennet water — mostly carriers but with some main river — holding wild brown trout and grayling alongside stocked brown and rainbow trout. No wading, medium-to-high difficulty, up to twelve rods, with a hut and barbecue facilities. Day rods, guided trips and small group days.

Denford Water

The most chalk-stream fishing of any Berkshire estate — around five miles of larger main river plus a maze of carriers and side streams, mostly bank fishing with occasional wading on small-stream sections. Wild fish supplemented by stocking, a full-time river keeper, a fishing cabin and adjacent parking. Day rods and season rods through Fishing Breaks; about two miles from the nearest station.

Benham Estate

A named River Kennet beat in the Newbury area appearing on both Fishing Breaks and Hook a Fly listings, but without enough clean beat-level detail in this pass to publish with the confidence of Benham or Denford. Listed as a candidate pending verification.

Barton Court

A featured beat on the River Lambourn, the Kennet's fast, clear tributary — bright gravel and undercut banks ideal for sight fishing, holding small wild fish, larger locally reared brown trout and a healthy grayling population. An all-wading beat for one rod or two friends; a different, lighter-tackle experience from Benham or Avington. Trout from 1 April; winter grayling day rods listed 1 October–28 February.

Donnington Grove (River Lambourn)

Downstream of the classic chalk-stream reaches the Kennet widens and deepens onto clays and gravels, supporting barbel, chub, roach, perch, gudgeon and bream through club and association water. Captured so anglers searching 'Kennet fishing' understand the lower river is a coarse fishery, not upstream dry-fly chalk stream.

Lower Kennet — mixed fisheries

The Kennet rises from chalk springs and flows down through Berkshire with a quiet, steady confidence — it is not as famous as the Test and for that reason it is better. A groundwater-fed chalk stream, the Kennet responds slowly to rain, typically forty-eight hours or more after heavy weather. The water is clear, the banks are intimate (you are never far from a bridge or a road, which means human company is easy to find), and the fish, though selective, are not apocalyptically so. It is the chalk stream where a working angler might actually afford a day or two. Mayfly hatches May–June are excellent, particularly in the upper reaches around Ramsbury and Axford where the water is narrower and the hatch more concentrated. Blue-winged olive evenings (April–June, September–October) produce reliable dry-fly sport. The Kennet responds well to small dries (size 14–16) and nymphed emergers during the hatch. Outside the hatch window, nymph-and-feather tactics (pheasant-tail, hare's-ear) work steadily. Winter (October–March) brings outstanding grayling fishing on small duns and spider patterns. Access is through clubs and syndicates; check with the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust and local fishing clubs for day-ticket availability.
