Safety on the Water

The Hungerford Fishery takes the safety of all Rods, Guests and workers very seriously, and carries out regular risk assessments.

There is always a risk when undertaking any activity near water — anyone using the Fishery's paths, stiles and bridges should take care, especially as the risk of slipping is greater after rain.

Power cables

Do not fish within 100 feet (30 metres) of any power cables.

Casting

Always wear eye protection when casting a fly or nymph, and be aware of others walking behind you — particularly if fishing on or near a public footpath.

Medical conditions & location

If you have a serious medical condition, carry a mobile phone with the emergency numbers and a means of establishing either the O.S. coordinates or what3words of where you are fishing. This matters — the Emergency Services, for example, will not know where the Wine Cellar Bridge is.

General health

It is recommended that your tetanus protection is up to date, and that a small first aid kit is added to your tackle bag so minor cuts and abrasions can be covered — minimising the risk of Weil's disease, which is transmitted through open wounds.

Reporting a concern

If you see anything of concern regarding health and safety on the Hungerford Fishery, please report it to the River Keeper or Fishery Secretary immediately, via the Fishery Office, so it can be dealt with appropriately.

Safety is largely a matter of common sense and awareness of your surroundings.
