How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Fishable all season thanks to the constant 11°C spring temperature — this is one of the few Italian trout waters where a cold snap or a summer drought barely registers. Best sport is still light-dependent: early and late in the day, and whenever cloud takes the glare off that famously clear water.
Where
Pool tails, weed-bed margins and the seams beside the ranunculus beds hold fish. In the S.I.M. no-kill water near Capestrano, work upstream methodically — the water is clear enough that a spooked fish tells every other fish in the pool.
Method
Long leader, small fly, upstream presentation — chalk-stream tactics transplanted to the Abruzzo hills. Dry-dropper covers the searching work; switch to a single small dry the moment you see a head. Fly-only and barbless on the no-kill water, no exceptions.
Kit
8.5 to 9 ft #3/4 rod, tippet down to 6X. 12 ft-plus leader for the clearest pools. Small nymphs and dries, sizes 16-20 — bigger flies just get refused here.
Why this works
Good — water temperature is right today, though time of day could be better.
