Slow going — pick your moments
River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Spring through to the late-September close, with the biggest fish most catchable in the low, clear water of early summer and again as the water cools in September. These are wild, wary trout in gin-clear water — overcast light and a lift in the river both help your chances.
Where
The reach between Castel di Sangro and the Ponte della Maddalena is the known water, and it earns its reputation — deep pools and long glides that hold serious fish. Above Villetta Barrea and the Barrea reservoir, the character tightens into narrower National Park gorge water.
Method
These are big, educated fish in clear water — treat every cast as your one shot. Streamers move the biggest trout, especially in low light; nymph the deeper pools methodically the rest of the time. The no-kill water is barbless, fish-from-the-net.
Kit
9 to 10 ft #5/6 for streamer work, 9 ft #4 for nymphing. 10-12 lb fluoro for streamers, down to 5X for nymphs in the clear pools. A net built for careful release — these fish deserve it.
Why this works
Water at 19°C — above the brown trout caution line (18°C). Fish dawn or dusk only. Land it fast, wet hands, no air shots.
