The Luzenac no-kill section is a designated reach of the Ariège in the Pyrenean foothills — fly-only, barbless single hook, catch-and-release only, and managed with enough care that the resident trout have the chance to grow up and become properly interesting. The water is classic Pyrenean freestone: fast, clean, oxygen-rich, with pocket water between boulder lies and longer gravel runs where the bigger fish patrol. Tight-line nymphing is the staple; dry-fly windows open in the evenings through June and July when the caddis come off in any numbers. The no-kill permit is often free on application, which is the kind of civilised arrangement that makes you remember why you bother with French fishing in the first place. Spring through early autumn is the window; by August the lower Ariège warms and the fishing moves upstream into the cooler water.
In the Pyrenean gaves and headwater torrents, resident brown trout move from early-season olives and March browns into strong spring and early-summer stonefly activity, then a long spell of evening caddis and small buzzers, with terrestrials most relevant on wooded lower gaves and much less important high above the tree line.
