Slow going — pick your moments
River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

About this water

The Avoca is formed at the Meeting of the Waters, where the Avonmore and Avonbeg join, and runs on through Avoca to the sea at Arklow, gathering the Aughrim on the way. Its history is a sad one for an angler: drainage from the old Avoca copper mines scarred the main river, and its trout fishing remains limited because of it. The better wild-trout water is upstream, on the Avonmore and Avonbeg headwaters before they meet.

Hatches & food

Mining pollution has left the lower main river poor for fly life and trout; what hatches there are run to hardy stoneflies, a few olives and summer sedges, with terrestrials important along the wooded banks.
