How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Regional trout season, 29 March to 4 October. Spring and early summer fish best before the stream drops to its bony late-summer flow — a shower after a dry spell is always worth chasing here.
Where
Pocket water and pool tails through the middle Enza around Vetto, and the no-kill water downstream at Selvanizza where the Cedra joins — the valley's benchmark stretch.
Method
Upstream nymph, short line, through the broken runs; dry-dropper once trout show confidence in the flatter water. Selvanizza and similar no-kill beats are barbless, immediate release, single hook only.
Kit
8.5 to 9.5 ft #3/4, floating line, 9 to 11 ft leader to 4/5 lb fluoro. Small-stream tactics — keep low, keep quiet, and don't stand where the fish should be.
Why this works
Water at 23.3°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills brown trout. Do not fish for them today.

Brown Trout fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

About this water

A modest torrent off the Reggio Apennines, running past sandstone bluffs and chestnut woods on its way down from Alpe di Succiso. The Enza is unshowy Mediterranean-strain brown trout water — clean pocket water, the occasional deep glide, nothing that photographs especially well and nothing that needs to. The no-kill stretch downstream at Selvanizza, where the Cedra comes in, is the local benchmark for what this valley can produce when it's left alone.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
A drop and clear would lift the flow and clarity scores.
