How to fish it · for Atlantic Salmon
When
Morning into early afternoon.
Where
Pool tails, steadier runs, and any water with pace.
Method
Fish a sensible line-and-fly combination for the height and pace of water.
Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.

About this water

The Ettrick Water is a declining Atlantic salmon system where declining Atlantic salmon populations are Category 3 under Scottish Government classification; every fish returned matters. Mandatory catch-and-release applies. The upper reaches above Ettrickbridge are classic wild trout water — stony, fast, full of character, and demanding the proper small-stream approach of short rod, short line, and a willingness to walk. The lower river from Selkirk down to the Tweed confluence is the salmon water, particularly productive on the autumn run in September and October when fresh fish push up from the main river. The Ettrick shares the famous Tweed autumn timing and a sinking-tip line with a small tube will find fish from the end of August onwards. Day tickets are accessible through local clubs and the Selkirk & District Angling Association.
