How to fish it · for Arctic Char
When
Summer surface temperatures have pushed char into the thermocline. They are present but harder to reach — deep lure fishing from a boat is the most reliable method.
Where
Fish deep with a sinking line. Char retreat to colder layers (10–30m) as surface water warms. Slow-sinking lures, streamers, or deep buzzers. Early morning or evening only.
The plan
Plan A

Fish deep with a sinking line. Char retreat to colder layers (10–30m) as surface water warms. Slow-sinking lures, streamers, or deep buzzers. Early morning or evening only.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

This is where Eastern Canada turns northern. Bigger brook trout, Arctic char, more streamer and leech work, less fussing over tiny dries unless fish tell you otherwise.

About this water

Igloo Lake sits in central Labrador — fly-in only, remote in the way that means genuinely remote rather than merely inconveniently located. Brook trout and Arctic char in cold, clear water. The brook trout run large here: fish of four pounds are not exceptional, and the occasional fish above that weight is not a surprise either. There is something particular about fishing for wild brook trout that have never seen a fly from anything other than your leader. The fishing is the point, and the wilderness is the condition that makes the fishing what it is.

DFO 2026-2027 trout table gives Zone 3 and Zone 5 to 15 September; exact Labrador zone should be confirmed for Igloo Lake. Igloo Lake is a Labrador brook trout lodge, so this is a reasonable default pending exact zone mapping.

  • Char 1 June31 August

Arctic char at Igloo Lake are managed under Newfoundland and Labrador provincial regulations and DFO authority. Fly-in lodge operation sets the practical window. Trophy char (to 4+ lb) in pristine wilderness setting. Confirm current regulations and lodge season before booking.
