How to fish it · for Trout
When
Approximately April to September, with altitude, access, and local rules checked carefully
Where
Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. Keep a sedge-style dry or emerger on a short leader for the evening rise.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point. Keep a sedge-style dry or emerger on a short leader for the evening rise.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

Boat — drift

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

Trout fly box

A compact mountain-river trout pack for the Middle and High Atlas. Similar in logic to Andalusía: stealthy, nymph-led, with short dry-fly windows and a little streamer cover.

Permits & access
Permit required — see local rules.
  • Permis de pêche (fishing permit) — locally issued
  • Foreign anglers should contact the local HCEFLCD delegation or a Moroccan fishing guide for the area they plan to visit
  • The permit system is not standardised for visitors in the way European systems are — expect local arrangements rather than an online purchase process
  • A guide familiar with the area is strongly recommended for both practical access and permit logistics.

About this water

The clearest named trout area in the High Atlas. Official tourism says Lakes Tislit and Isli are places where trout abound. Imilchil sits at high altitude in the eastern High Atlas, where the lakes are the main draw and surrounding streams add secondary small-water potential. Less documented than Ifrane, but still one of the clearest named Moroccan trout zones in public tourism material.
