About this water

A flashy Pennine-fringe tributary of the Eden, rising on the peat mosses of Spadeadam Waste on the Cumbria–Northumberland border and cutting west through Hadrian's Wall country — past the Roman fort at Birdoswald and the gorge at Gilsland — before easing down through Brampton to join the Eden near Warwick Bridge. It responds quickly to hill rain and clears just as fast. Wild brown trout throughout, and a genuine head of grayling that the local association fishes as a winter product: the statutory grayling season opens in June, but access is sold from October when the trout season has closed. North Country spider water in summer, and honest winter grayling fishing on falling, clearing water thereafter.
