When

The plan
Plan A

Start with Booby (8-10) on a fast strip on floating line or static on sinking. Rainbows respond to more active retrieves — try short strips between pauses. If that does not produce, switch depth or speed before changing the pattern entirely.

Plan B

Fish early and late, try deeper during the heat of the day with a fast-sinking line.

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

About this water

A compact Borders fishery on the Upper Tweed, offering both a two-acre fly lake and two miles of river with fifteen named pools — an unusual combination on a single day ticket. The lake holds trophy rainbows (record 18lb 7oz) with golden, blue, and tiger trout alongside stocked and wild browns; trickle stocking keeps fish in good condition. The river beat holds wild browns, grayling, and a salmon run from July through October. A 3.25lb grayling on a nymph from the Tweed pools is an entirely realistic ambition.
