About this water

The Kalum joins the Skeena just north of Terrace and is one of the more accessible Skeena-region rivers, holding both summer and winter steelhead plus good salmon. Lake-fed at its head, it has a little more clarity buffer than the pure glacial rivers, though it still answers to the glacier. Fish it on the swing when clear, with weighted flies when there's colour, across a long season.

Under the surface

The Kalum runs into the Skeena just north of Terrace, a lake-headed glacial river that holds both summer and winter steelhead and good Pacific salmon. Lake influence buffers it somewhat, but glacial input still drives its clarity. A productive, accessible river by Skeena standards, fished both on the swing and, in coloured water, with weighted flies.

Wading: Cold glacial water, strong current

  • Glacial till
  • Partly confined
  • Pool riffle
  • Large river
Conservation note

Wild steelhead (summer and winter runs), catch-and-release. Chinook and coho present, separately regulated.
