Open water drifts from the boathouse — the Heronry, Mailing Bay, the Hotel Bay. Loch-style drift water through and through.
Method
Loch-style drift on a floating line with a team of three; midge-tip with sedges and dabblers through summer; sweeping line for the back-end. Drogue is essential.
Kit
10 ft #7 boat rod; floating, intermediate and fast-intermediate lines; 6 to 8 lb fluoro. Drogue and a long-handled net.
The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work Green Peter family on the bob, Hebridean daylight small-attractor family on the middle dropper, and Small search nymph or wet family on the point. Have a sedge or murrough pattern ready on a short leader for the evening rise. In the ripple, a bushy searching dry (Hopper, Shipman's, Elk Hair Caddis) outperforms flush emergers — it stays visible and holds the surface tension.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

Watch for

Evening tends to be the best period in summer — stay late if you can for a sedge or spinner fall.

A gentle ripple is ideal for drifting — broadside drift covering the wind lanes should be productive.

About this water

Scotland's only 'lake' — a sheltered, low-lying water that feels intimate after the vast Highland lochs. Mix of stocked rainbows and wild browns makes fishing engaging throughout the season (March–October). Buzzer fishing in spring and early summer is particularly productive; sedges from June onward create predictable hatches. Depth ranges from 0–10ft in shallow northern bays (Gateside Bay, around islands) to over 60ft south of Inchmahome and in the Otter Bay / Lochend Bay area. Crannogs (ancient lake dwellings just below the surface) are marked on the fishery map — navigation hazards.
