About this water

A renowned NW Iceland salmon river flowing through the Laxárdalur valley to Hvammsfjörður bay near Búðardalur. Around 26 kilometres of productive water over a medium-sized rocky bed, famed for producing large multi-sea-winter salmon. This is a later-running river by Icelandic standards — the peak comes in August rather than July — which gives it a distinct character among Iceland's top salmon venues. Average annual catch has historically run around 1,200 fish. Basalt bedrock underlies this river. Iceland's salmon are managed conservatively under operator and national rules — quotas, size limits and catch-and-release are widely applied; check the river's rules before fishing.
