Llyn Egnant

A gravel track beside Llyn Egnant, an upland lake in the Cambrian Mountains, Wales, with misty hills in the background.

Egnant is one of the Teifi Pools, the string of headwater lakes above Tregaron where the River Teifi effectively begins its life, and it fishes the way you'd expect water at that altitude to fish — wild browns, thin in the water sometimes but honest, and a landscape so exposed that weather becomes half the story of any day up there.

The plan
Plan A

Set up a broadside drift and cover the water systematically. Work a bushy searching pattern on the bob and drop a contrasting nymph on the point.

Plan B

If the main plan is not working, switch to a smaller, more imitative pattern fished slower and deeper. A change of drift angle can also make a difference.

About this water

Egnant is one of the Teifi Pools, the string of headwater lakes above Tregaron where the River Teifi effectively begins its life, and it fishes the way you'd expect water at that altitude to fish — wild browns, thin in the water sometimes but honest, and a landscape so exposed that weather becomes half the story of any day up there. The Teifi Pools aren't subtle: wind finds you, the light changes fast, and there's nowhere to hide from either. Egnant doesn't distinguish itself sharply from its neighbouring pools so much as it completes the set — fish the group as a day, not a single destination, and Egnant earns its place in the rotation.

Why this score
  • Cloud cover (cloud) suits the fishery well.
  • Damsel Nymph is in its seasonal window, boosting the chance of targeted feeding.
