About this water

Lewis's largest freshwater loch — a remote, peat-stained water stretching six miles through the interior moorland. Langavat holds wild brown trout, salmon, sea trout, and a relict population of Arctic charr. The trout average half a pound but fish to two pounds are taken regularly on the drift. Salmon and sea trout run the short outflow system from late June. Access is by foot across open moorland — a genuine wilderness experience. The loch responds dramatically to wind; a good wave on a warm overcast day can produce explosive sport with trout rising freely to bushy wet flies. Calm days are harder and demand patience. The isolation is both the challenge and the reward. Peat-stained moorland water defines this river. Atlantic salmon stocks are Category 3 (declining) — all salmon must be released.

    Arctic char (Charr) — Langavat's relict char population is a conservation concern. Seasons and catch rules are set locally by the managing estate to protect the wild stock. If char are encountered as by-catch, practice immediate C&R. Check with the estate (Grimersta) or FishHebrides before any char targeting.

Sea trout: Variable seasonal (2026) — Hebridean sea trout stocks have collapsed under sustained sea-lice pressure from salmon farms on the west coast. Scottish sea trout rod catch was reported at 'lowest on record' in 2025. Langavat system retains a wild sea trout fishery but operates in a severely diminished baseline. Condition-led; catch-and-release expected.
