About this water

Nova Scotia's most important Atlantic salmon river and one of the few remaining productive salmon rivers in the Maritimes. Compact (55 km), fast-responding (5 hours), and with an unusually late-running salmon fishery extending into October–November when other rivers have closed. Also an excellent brown trout and brook trout river. Gaspé-style patterns (Green Highlander, Blue Charm, Silver Rat) plus Bomber. The Margaree is unique in Atlantic Canada for its selective, challenging salmon — fly-only water with technical fish. Cape Breton setting is outstanding. Atlantic salmon are managed under DFO conservation rules — mandatory catch-and-release of large (multi-sea-winter) salmon applies in most areas, with any grilse retention strictly limited by zone; check current regulations before fishing.
