A central Gipuzkoa trout-and-sea-trout river of solid reputation, flowing through pastoral landscapes with mixed geology and a 6-hour spate response. The middle sections hold the most productive pools and offer quieter fishing than the better-known Bidasoa or Urumea. In practical terms this is a trout river with some migratory heritage, not a modern salmon-destination row.
In the steep, often pressured Atlantic rivers of the Basque Country, trout opportunities centre on spring olives and other up-wings when flows and colour briefly line up, with caddis and buzzers helping to sustain sport into early and mid-summer, and terrestrials from grassy, wooded margins adding surface food in quieter, recovering reaches.
