The Rangitīkei is the classic large river of the lower North Island — long pools and glides running through dramatic papa gorges, holding both brown and rainbow trout. The upper river is clearer, more intimate freestone water for sight fishing; the middle river is big, scenic gorge water. It colours after rain off the soft mudstone country, so read the level and fish it falling and clearing.
The Rangitīkei runs south from the Kaimanawa through dramatic white papa cliffs and deep mudstone gorges to the Manawatū coast, a classic large North Island river of long pools and willow-lined glides.
