Severe drought restrictions (alerte renforcée) in force

The VI - Sélune - ESU zone (Dept 50) is at alerte renforcée — the second-highest French drought tier — under a préfectoral arrêté. Fishing itself is not named as prohibited, but water is severely restricted and flows are likely very low; fish with care and check locally.

Arrêté préfectoral n°37583

Temporary notices from official orders and recent fishery reports — they clear automatically once out of date. Always confirm locally before travelling.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
Through the open trout season. Spring olives April through May; sedges through summer; small dark flies into late September.
Where
Normandy character — pool tails, weeded glides, the cushion behind alder roots. The Sélune flows through small intimate water.
Method
Upstream dry to spotted rising fish; long leader, fine tippet. Move slowly, cast accurately. The Sélune is small water and rewards careful approach.
Kit
9 ft #4 — Normandy default. Floating line, 14 ft leader to 4 lb fluoro. Polarising glasses non-negotiable.
Why this works
Water at 23°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills brown trout. Do not fish for them today.

More balanced than the mountain-river pack. French nymphing still matters, but there is more room for dries, spiders and general searching flies.

About this water

The Sélune is the most important river restoration project in European history. In 2021 and 2022 the Vezins and La Roche-qui-Boit dams were removed — the largest dam demolition ever undertaken on the continent — and roughly 90 kilometres of salmon habitat locked away for over a century was opened again to the Atlantic. Smolts emigrated from reaches that had not seen a salmon in 100 years within months of the reservoirs being drained. Adult fish followed. Salmon fishing is closed throughout the Seine-Normandie basin under the 2026–27 basin order, which is the right outcome for a population this early in its recovery. The river is still finding its shape: the bed is readjusting, gravel bars are forming, the thermal regime is stabilising. The upper beats above Ducey are increasingly productive for wild brown trout on a river that is still, in a real sense, being born. Treat the place with the respect the restoration deserves — disinfect your gear, and remember that every fish you meet is proof that a river can come back.

Hatches & food

On Atlantic trout rivers in Normandy and Brittany, regional studies and on-the-bank experience point to spring mayflies as the main early driver, a strong band of spring and early-summer caddis as channels warm and open, background buzzer life ticking away right through the year, and terrestrials from wooded banks adding important surface food in summer and early autumn, with autumn olives extending sport wherever trout-season rules allow.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
