Slow going — pick your moments
River temperature is the limiting factor today, not the flow. Fish dawn or dusk if you go at all, and handle everything with extra care.

About this water

North Dublin's urban wild trout river — on IFI's Dublin trout-river list alongside the Liffey, Dodder, and Rye Water, but a local option rather than a destination. Rises near Dunshaughlin in Meath and flows ~33 km east through the Tolka Valley and Glasnevin to Dublin Bay at East Wall. The best fly water is the rural Meath headwaters and the Tolka Valley Park reach; the lower urban stretches downstream of Glasnevin are heavily impacted. Useful for the local angler with an evening to spare, not a planned day trip. Season permits only — no day tickets.

Hatches & food

EPA kick-sample monitoring on the River Tolka, a short and largely urban Dublin river, confirms mayflies, caddis, midges and blackflies, and freshwater shrimp and hoglice are present across its WFD segments, with no stoneflies recorded. This is modest presence evidence only, not a hatch calendar.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
The dawn and dusk windows score higher than the midday lull.
