Official fishing restriction in force (arrêté sécheresse, alerte renforcée)

The Secteur Touques - ESU zone (Dept 14) is at alerte renforcée under a préfectoral drought arrêté, which prohibits fishing on first-category (salmonid) watercourses. Check the arrêté and with the local AAPPMA before travelling.

How to fish it · for Brown Trout
When
April olives and CDC grannom in the morning; iron blue from late afternoon. Through the open season, mid-March into late September. Chalk-stream pace — slow water, careful approach.
Where
Pool tails, weeded glides, and the ranunculus runs through Lisieux and the upper beats. Watch under the alders for trout sipping in the cushion of slow water.
Method
Upstream dry to spotted rising fish; CDC grannom or iron blue in size 16. Long leader, fine tippet — French chalk water reads every line wrinkle. Move slowly, cast accurately, get it right first time.
Kit
9 ft #4 — chalk-stream default. Floating line, 14 ft leader to 4 lb fluoro. Polarising glasses are non-negotiable. Wade lightly where local rules allow.
Why this works
Water at 23.3°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills brown trout. Do not fish for them today.

Ranked for today
Brown Trout fly box

Classic French chalkstream fishing. Gin-clear, weed-rich, slow to moderate flow. Dry fly and sight nymphing dominate. Stronger sedge hatches than English equivalents. French tradition favours flush-sitting dries (comparaduns, CDC patterns) and upstream presentation.

About this water

The Touques is the one French sea trout river that still justifies the journey. It rises in the Pays d'Auge — apple country, Calvados country — and runs north through Lisieux to the sea at Deauville, a chalk stream carrying clear, stable water over clean gravel for most of its fifty-odd kilometres. The fish counter at Breuil-en-Auge recorded over six thousand sea trout in 2023, and the basin is estimated to hold five to six thousand fish in a good year. This is not a marginal fishery clinging to existence. It is the most abundant sea trout system in France, and it fishes accordingly. Sea trout enter from late April and run through October, with the main body of fish arriving June through August. Fish the lower river and its tributaries — the Calonne, the Orbiquet — on the drop after rain, when colour gives the fish confidence to move. Evening and night fishing from June, floating line, size 10 wet flies fished across and down. The Touques is open water in a country where most migratory salmonid fishing is now closed. Fish it while it lasts.

Hatches & food

In chalk-spring and karst trout systems, generally stable temperatures broaden olive and other mayfly activity from early spring into autumn, with strong evening caddis, steady subsurface scuds and buzzers where clear groundwater and weedbeds develop, and terrestrials from meadow and woodland banks rounding out the food calendar, depending on how fast each river drops and clears after rain.

What would change the calculation
Cooler water — back toward the 10–16 °C ideal band — would lift the score and ease welfare.
The dawn and dusk windows score higher than the midday lull.
