Not to be confused with Lake Vyrnwy, the reservoir at its head — this is the river running out of the dam at Llanwddyn down through the Vyrnwy Gorge, Dolanog, Meifod and Llanymynech to join the Severn near Melverley.

About this water

Not to be confused with Lake Vyrnwy, the reservoir at its head — this is the river running out of the dam at Llanwddyn down through the Vyrnwy Gorge, Dolanog, Meifod and Llanymynech to join the Severn near Melverley. Dam-regulated compensation flow keeps the upper river fishing well even when its unregulated Severn-catchment neighbours are running low, and it's held a good, growing grayling population since restoration work began. Wild brown trout run to a genuinely large size on the upper beats.
