When
Morning into early afternoon.
Where
Pool tails, steadier runs, and any water with pace.
Method

Kit
13 ft #8/9 double-hander in spate, 10 ft #8 single in low water. Floating line plus a fast-sink tip. 12–15 lb fluoro tippet.
Why this works
Water at 22.1°C. This is the line where catch-and-release kills atlantic salmon. Do not fish for them today.

The Ness is the most accessible Inverness salmon system — a short, powerful, loch-fed river running straight through the city from Loch Ness to the firth, fishable from the opening day (15 January) to 15 October. Loch Ness buffers extremes, so it stays in order when neighbouring spate rivers are too thin or too wild. Access splits between Inverness Angling Club town water (the ordinary-angler route), the productive Ness Castle / Ness-Side beats, and the Dochfour / Loch Ness outflow beats. There is a hard conservation overlay: the Ness DSFB 2026 policy recommends no deliberate killing of salmon at all, with all salmon and grilse returned until stocks recover — so good conditions should never produce an aggressive 'go kill a fish' prompt. Sea-trout catches are in continued, severe decline; do not sell sea trout as an easy fallback.

Inverness Angling ClubMembers
The town-water route and the strongest visitor-access story on the river — the club controls accessible beats through Inverness with permits for visiting anglers.
Ness Castle & Ness-SideAgent booking
The productive named beats just above the town — Ness Castle has just over a mile of double-bank fishing, a five-rod limit, one ghillie and strong fly water, with notable pools including Black Stream, Lady Pool and The Laggan.
Dochfour & Loch Ness outflowAgent booking
The top of the river where it leaves Loch Ness — loch-fed transition water holding running fish, controlled/private estate beat logic, bookable through FishPal and the estate, often with a ghillie.
