The Border Esk and its tributary the Liddel are a Solway-border salmon and sea-trout system, but read them as a mixed river — sea trout are the river's real distinction, with salmon, brown trout and grayling alongside. It is a rules-first river: byelaws and association rules are unusually important and unusually strict. A cross-border quirk matters for visitors — the Esk is administered under English byelaws even where it flows in Scotland, so confirm the current licence position; in practice you fish on a beat or association permit, which is essential whichever side you are on. Access is club- and association-led (Langholm AA, Border Esk & Liddel AC all-water ticket) plus estate beats. Check the current byelaws before any salmon or sea-trout session.

Langholm Angling AssociationMembers
The practical association water on the Esk around Langholm — affordable day and visitor permits for salmon, sea trout and trout, with a real ordinary-angler route rather than estate weeks.
Border Esk & Liddel AC all-water ticketMembers
The all-water club ticket covering Esk and Liddel/Newcastleton water — a strong club/membership lane spanning several beats, good value for a visitor wanting flexibility.
Irvine Lower & Middle (Bowhill)Season rods
Estate sea-trout beats — Irvine Lower and Irvine Middle are double-bank water with a strong sea-trout reputation, fish in the 4–7 lb class reported from opening day.

About this water

Border country spate river with reliable sea trout runs (June to August, peaking July) — one of Scotland's best-documented sea trout fisheries with consistently strong performance. Mandatory catch-and-release applies. Declining Atlantic salmon populations are Category 3 under Scottish Government classification; every fish returned matters. Autumn salmon run September into November, though the rod season closes 31 October. The Border Esk responds quickly to rain and fishes best on the drop after spates. Night fishing for sea trout in summer is productive; day fishing works too, making this more flexible than purely nocturnal systems. Main pool system concentrates fish — focus effort here and fish through systematically.

Sea trout: Seasonal open (2026) — The Border Esk is one of Scotland's most documented and consistently productive sea trout fisheries. Unlike west-coast and Hebridean rivers, the Border Esk does not face sea-lice pressure and has maintained more stable stocks. Good runs through summer with peaks in June and late summer. Night fishing is the primary method.
