About this water

The Ariège cuts through the heart of the Pyrenees from high mountains through Luzenac and Foix. Mixed granite headwaters and limestone foothills support wild brown trout — 1st-category water with multiple tributaries. Luzenac section has designated no-kill fly-fishing beat (marked 'PARCOURS NO KILL', free permit on application). Higher waters best early season; lower sections hold consistent trout.

Hatches & food

In the Pyrenean gaves and headwater torrents, resident brown trout move from early-season olives and March browns into strong spring and early-summer stonefly activity, then a long spell of evening caddis and small buzzers, with terrestrials most relevant on wooded lower gaves and much less important high above the tree line.
