How to fish it · for Grayling
When
June through autumn, once the January-May closed season lifts. The gravel runs between the granite pools suit them well.
Where
Riffle heads and the faster gravel water between the deeper pools — they sit higher and further out than the trout.
Method
Euro-nymph as the default approach; dries when a hatch shows through the afternoon.
Kit
10 ft #3 nymphing rod, 4-5 lb fluoro; 9 ft #4 for dries. 12 ft leader.
Why this works
Fair — time of day is working for you, but water temperature is the limiting factor today.

Ranked for today
Grayling fly box

A fuller Italian trout and grayling box for the southern Alps and northern limestone/alpine systems. It keeps the marble-trout streamer accent, but adds proper grayling dries and bugs, competition nymphs, caddis/olive work, terrestrials, pocket-water dries and alpine lake patterns.

Permits & access
Permit required — see local rules.
  • Marble trout carry a year-round no-take rule (reservoirs excepted); brown trout have a 25cm minimum size and a 1 Dec-second Saturday of Feb closed season; grayling a 33cm minimum and a 1 Jan-31 May closed season
  • Individual concession-holders can extend or tighten these rules for their own stretch.

About this water

The Aurino comes down off the Rieserferner group below the Birnlücke pass, deep in what's now a protected nature park, and runs about fifty kilometres through the Tauferer Ahrntal before it gives itself up to the Rienza near Bruneck. It's granite country up here rather than the limestone further south in Trentino, and the water carries that clarity — cold, hard, faintly grey-green over the boulders. The valley has a real reputation among Italian fly anglers for holding all three of South Tyrol's headline species in one system: wild brown trout through the pocket water, marble trout in the deeper holding pools lower down, and grayling scattered through the gravel runs between. Fishing rights along most of the river are privately managed, which keeps the pressure sensible and the water in decent shape. It isn't a secret river exactly, but it's a quiet one — long valley, small villages, and water that rewards someone willing to walk a bit further than the car park.
